Swine flu death toll in India rises to 1243

<strong>New Delhi, February 4 --</strong> The lethal swine flu influenza shows no sign of abating as new cases of H1N1 related deaths and infections continue to surface every day. With five more lives being snuffed out Wednesday, the death toll in the nation has reached 1,243 so far.

New Delhi, February 4 -- The lethal swine flu influenza shows no sign of abating as new cases of H1N1 related deaths and infections continue to surface every day. With five more lives being snuffed out Wednesday, the death toll in the nation has reached 1,243 so far.

Of these, three deaths were reported from Gujarat yesterday while one death each was reported from the states of Maharashtra and New Delhi.

Three of the deaths were reported Wednesday, while the remaining two causalities had occurred earlier and were confirmed by the respective state's health authorities on the same day.

Number of latest infections across the nation
According to official sources, 46 indigenous cases of the contagion were confirmed on Monday.

The fresh cases of the swine flu infection reported across different parts of the country were as follows: 22 in Maharashtra, eight in Rajasthan, seven in Delhi, five in Gujarat, and one each in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir.

Till date, 1,23,443 samples have been tested for swine flu both by the government and private laboratories across the nation, with 28,861 having been confirmed positive.

State-wise death count
In the state of Maharashtra--the epicenter of swine flu outbreak in India--320 people lost their battle with swine flu, the highest death count in the country so far.

Meanwhile, 245 people succumbed to the lethal influenza in Gujarat, 176 in Rajasthan, and 141 in Karnataka.

The total swine flu deaths in other states are as follows: 94 in Delhi, 52 in Andhra Pradesh, 38 in Punjab, 37 in Kerala, 36 in Haryana, 22 in Madhya Pradesh, 18 in Uttar Pradesh, 13 in Uttarakhand, eight each in Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh, seven in Tamil Nadu, six each in Chhattisgarh and Puducherry, five in Goa, four in Jammu & Kashmir, three in Orissa, two each in Assam, and one each in Mizoram and Dadra & Nagar Haveli.

Swine flu vaccine in India
According to health authorities, an indigenous range of swine flu vaccines, currently slated for testing, will hit the country’s shelves by April this year.

Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad informed, “We are developing the swine flu vaccine which will form the base for immunizing other influenzas like bird flu as well.”

On the other hand, imported swine flu vaccines will reach India by third week of February to provide immediate medical relief to the high-risk groups such as children, elderly, pregnant women, Drug Controller General of India S. Singh said.
