That alcohol can put you at a risk of breast cancer! Women beware!
(WASHINGTON, District of Columbia-AFP) – These days, there are many young women who consume alcohol in their daily routine. They are hardly aware of the fact that it might be raising their risk of breast cancer, as stated by U.S. research published, Wednesday.
With each and every alcoholic drink a woman tends to consume everyday, right from the time her menstrual periods start till her first full-term pregnancy, invokes her risk of breast cancer by almost 13 per cent, stated the study in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
In this recent study the researchers also noticed that every additional drink be it beer, hard liquor or wine, has hiked the risk of proliferative benign breast disease by around 15 per cent.
One more factor discovered is the period of gap between the first menstrual period and the first childbirth.
“Reducing drinking to less than one drink per day, especially during this time period, is a key strategy to reducing lifetime risk of breast cancer,” stated the study author Graham Colditz, associate director for cancer prevention at Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine.
A former research has discovered a direct link between taking alcohol in adulthood and higher breast cancer risk.
“More and more heavy drinking is occurring on college campuses and during adolescence, and not enough people are considering future risk,” added Colditz.
The Health authorities suggest that almost one in eight women would definitely be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.
The risk factors associated along include family history of breast cancer, advancing age, having heavy breasts, early menstruation, late onset menopause and also having the first child after the age of 30 or never having children at all, as well as obesity and alcohol use.
