Though women engage in “sex for sex’s sake” (purely physical sexual encounter with no emotional stakes, like one night stands) just as often as men, they are less likely to ride that situation to completion, claims a novel study presented at the International Academy of Sex Research’s annual meeting.

Turns out it is difficult for women to achieve climax with partners they don’t know well, if at all. In other words, it is much easier for the females to orgasm from intercourse while in a serious relationship than to be fulfilled through casual sex by partners they don’t know well.

“The notion of sexual liberation, where men and women both had equal access to casual sex, assumed a comparable likelihood of that sex being pleasurable,” Kim Wallen, a professor of neuroendocrinology at Emory University told the New York Times. “But that part of the playing field isn’t level.”

600 college students surveyed

In order to get some insight into whether women have a relatively harder time to orgasm, compared to men during hook-ups, Justin R. Garcia, an evolutionary biologist at the Kinsey Institute at Indiana University surveyed 600 college students.

It was noted that women were twice as likely to reach orgasm through both oral sex and traditional intercourse when they are in a committed relationships as they are with random hook up partners.

Earlier research

The findings of the study back those of another earlier research led by Paula England, a sociologist at New York University who delves into the dynamics of casual sex. As a part of the study, England questioned 24,000 students at 21 colleges over a period of five years.

The study found 40 percent women reportedly got it off during a hookup compared to 80 percent men. On the other hand, 74 percent of women in a committed relationship reported that they’d had an orgasm the last time they’d had sex.

Experts theorize that perhaps women are not comfortable instructing and directing random dudes about what they need during sex while their male partners are admittedly less focused on pleasing a casual sex partner.

“We attribute that to practice with a partner, which yields better success at orgasm, and we also think the guys care more in a relationship,” said one researcher.
