Software Developed to Identify Cause of Maternal Deaths in India

Maternal deaths have been a thorn that has nagged the medical experts in India for a good amount of time. One of the important points under Millennium Development Goals, obliterating the problem of maternal deaths, is being clasped from its root by a group of medical intelligentsia.
Purpose of the Software
In order to track pregnant women, bolster maternal healthcare services and also reduce maternal mortality ratio by comprehending the causes behind the high maternal deaths, the Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI) has developed a software. The purpose stated for the same is to curb the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) and to identify the women who are dying.
The software has been handed over to the central government and would be launched very soon. According to the president-elect of the International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO), CN Purandare, the launch may turn out to be a fresh start for India in this field. May be this is a ‘sanguine sunrise’ for all Indian women who carry an existence in their womb!!
The software would allow transmission of information as a unique number would be assigned to pregnant women. The software would be connected to the state headquarters and so they would be able to access data about the number of pregnancies. The information would be beneficial for primary and tertiary health care centers as well.
Besides, ‘Maternal Death Review’ programme would also be launched in the remote areas of India. Such endeavors become all the more important considering the MMR in India; 212 maternal deaths out of 1,00,000 live births.
