“Precious Baby” Pregnancies Meet Precious Attention of Doctors: Research

If you thought that pregnancy advice is same for all pregnant moms, regardless of how the baby was conceived, the results of the study proves it wrong! An international study that was conducted recently shows that moms who conceive using the assistance of reproductive technologies would be offered different guidance than those moms who conceived naturally.
The study found that parents who choose ART or Assisted Reproductive Technologies are highly prone to lots of risks during pregnancy than naturally conceiving parents.
The results of this study were published in the Human Reproduction, Oxford Journal that suggests that doctors handle such pregnancies in a different way.
The study underlines the fact that the moms undergoing ART might be a bit older and generally would deliver the baby through cesarean section. The study calls such pregnancies by coining a term, “precious baby”.
Dr. Yaniv Hanoch, Associate professor, Psychology, Plymouth University, UK said that this study reveals that there might be tendency for the doctors to be influenced by the pregnancy nature before considering the wishes of the parents. He also added that some pregnancies are considered more valuable by few parents than the rest.
This is especially if they have undergone several sessions of reproductive treatments to conceive. He also said that parents have to expect medical recommendations and follow it to make sure that the pregnancy is a successful one, especially if it involved a number of tests to treat serious medical issues of the parents.
To understand whether the doctors manage ART pregnancies in a different way, the Israel and UK researchers prepared a questionnaire, which was based on the hypothetical case of 37-year-old woman who was pregnant. This questionnaire was offered to over 163 obstetricians and gynaecologists to answer it.
The study revealed that when the physicians were reluctant to recommend a few tests to the pregnant mom when they learned that the baby was conceived differently. About 19.2% of doctors replied that they would recommend the test which was much low when compared to the 43% if the pregnancy was natural. The researchers feel that even doctors are not immune towards ‘precious baby’ pregnancies.
